What actually matters on a hand tool
Price differences on hand tools are wide and not always meaningful. Three things decide whether a tool lasts.
- Steel and hardening on anything that cuts or grips. A cheap spanner rounds a nut and then you have two problems. This is where paying more returns most.
- Handle and grip on anything you use all day. Comfort is not a luxury when it is eight hours of the same movement.
- Insulation on electrical tools is a rating, not a coating. A plastic handle is not the same as a VDE-rated tool, and the difference matters at the one moment it is tested.
Building a kit from nothing
A contractor starting out, or a property manager setting up a maintenance store, usually asks the same question. This is the order that gets the most use per rupee.
First
Combination spanner set, socket set with ratchet, screwdriver set, combination and long-nose pliers, side cutters, claw hammer, tape measure, spirit level, adjustable wrench.
Second
Cold chisel and bolster, hacksaw, files, Allen key set, water pump pliers, tin snips, torch, cable cutter, utility knife.
Third
Torque wrench, circlip pliers, crimping tool, bolt croppers, pipe wrench, punch set, hole saw set, tool box or roll cab.
